Bass Drum Dampening

By Nick Hemingway

Firstly, Get rid of that pillow, it's taking up valuable air space in your drum, If you have a 22 inch Bass drum and 50% is taken up with pillow's etc you only have a 11" bass drum in reality.

If you want to dampen the bass drum heads to remove the unwanted ring etc, try the following:-

If you have the cash...

Super Kick1. Buy and fit a 'Aquarian Super-Kick II' or equivalent bass drum head.

(The Super-Kick™ series features Aquarian’s patented “Floating Muffling System”. A narrow felt muffle ring is attached to the backside of the drumhead to produce a low-end, well-defined punchy sound.)

2. If you need even more muffling, get a 'Protection Racket' Drum Muffler or equivalent.

Without spending any money...

1. Cut a strip of carpet 12" x (the distance between your skins on the inside of your bass drum).

2. Fold the carpet down the middle (furry side out) so it now measures 6" x (18" for e.g.) and bind with gaffer tape.

3. Place your newly made 'Bass Drum Dampener' in the bottom of your drum so that it is lying flat and just touching both the batter and resonant heads.
